For larger heat pump installations or where there is insufficient area available for horizontal collectors then drilling down vertically can be considered. The depths achievable vary between 45 and 300 metres and have a diameter between 100 and 300mm . After the drilling pipes can be installed allowing a flow and return arrangement. Multiple boreholes are then connected via a header arrangement which is then taken into the plant room. This method of collection is more reliable than air as there are no seasonal variations in the temperature.
