This method of energy collection is typically the lowest cost option for a ground source heat pump. Pipes are laid in shallow trenches, covered with sand and then backfilled. For domestic ground source installations this is the favoured option as no specialist equipment is required. As long as the correct spacings are allowed for either straight or slinky type pipes can be used. The main drawback with this method is the area of land required.
